Just destroying cannabis won’t make the area drug, admin needs act though against drug dealers as well; say locals, Will take every possible step to eradicate this menace from the area; SDM

Shopian, Sep 12 (KNO): Expressing happiness over destroying cannabis grown on thousands of Kanals of land in Melhoora and Wanduna area of Zainapora sub-district in south Kashmir’s Shopian district, locals said that there is a lot more to do in order to eradicate this menace.

They said that sub-district administration needs appreciation for completely destroying the cannabis grown on agricultural land in the area but in order to eradicate it completely they need to do more.

Sajad Ahmad, a teacher from the area said they are happy that administration has destroyed the cannabis from Melhoora and Wanduna villages which are known as hub of drug-addiction but administration must remain steadfast as people of the area not only grow cannabis but also are involved in its trade.

“Authorities must take action against drug dealers as dozens of locals are involved in the trade of brown sugar, charas, fukki and other banned drugs,” he said.

Dr, Tanveer Hayat, a senior journalist from the area said that authorities must take strict action against the persons involved in the cultivation and trade of cannabis.

He said that they are happy that cannabis in some parts of the area have been destroyed for the first time and they are hopefully that officers especially SDM Zainapora and SHO Zainapora will take every possible steps to eradicate this menace.

Sub-district magistrate Zainapora, Dr Syed Altaf Hussian said that after conducting back to back drives, Melhoora and Wanduna villages have been freed from this trade and almost entire cannabis grown by locals have been destroyed.

He further added that revenue authorities have been directed to identify the bung cultivators so that the effective measures can be taken to stop its production and the persons involved will be booked under appropriate provisions of law.

SDM also assured that they will provide some alternative crops to these cannabis cultivators which have a good market value, besides awareness camps will be conducted in the area very soon.

Station house officer Zainapora, Basharat Ali said they will take action against the persons who cultivate cannabis despite repeated warnings and cases under relevant sections of law will be lodged against them.

He requested people to co-operate with them and inform them about all those who are involved in cultivation, trade and addiction of any illegal crop and material so that they can make this area drug free.

Meanwhile, excise and taxation officer south Kashmir, Saleem Akbar said that they have destroyed bung cultivation on over 1200 Kanals of land in Melhoora and Wanduna villages alone and they are going to destroy more in the area in next few days—(KNO)
