South Kashmir family was not thrashed, news report baseless: Police
ammu and Kashmir Police on Friday refuted the news that a family from south Kashmir’s Kulgam district was thrashed by the government forces.
“In reference to news being circulated by some sections of press regarding thrashing of inmates of a family from Poniwa Kulgam. The news circulated is baseless and concocted,” said a spokesman.
“While confirming the details from the district administration, it has been clarified that yesterday a team of security forces went to arrest one of the inmate of family, some miscreants created hue and cry in the area and pelted stones upon the personnel which were doing their lawful duty.”
“To avoid any damage to life and property security force personnel responding in professional manner withdrew from the area. The news as such is rebutted.”
“Moreover, the family along with respectable people from the area visited SP Kulgam today and assured full cooperation with police in future and also apologized for their behavior.”
The family of Manzoor Ahmed of Poniwa Kulgam village, according to a local news agency, said that on Tuesday night government forces cordoned off their house.
“They barged into our house and demanded cell phones and identity cards from us. When we resisted, they unleashed a reign of terror and thrashed us without any mercy,” said the women folk, according to the report.
The family members and locals from the village Thursday assembled outside District Magistrate’s office Kulgam and demanded stern action against the forces, said the agency.
